Return of Sarkozy?

Last Friday the Elysee began to celebrate after two polls showed slight improvements in Sarkozy's approval numbers. While still likely in the margin of error, this trend appears to continuing according to a Viavoice poll to appear in Libération tomorrow. Taken June 5-6, it shows a three point jump to 41% for Sarkozy, while Fillon remains virtually unchanged (-1) at 47%.

This means that Sarkozy will go into his EU-UM launch with slightly more public confidence, and that event in itself is likely to help his fortunes to some degree. He is unlikely to regain the 60+% he enjoyed in the aftermath of his election, at least in the foreseeable future, though over 50% should be achievable. If this trend continues, it will be interesting to see how this affects the Socialists this November, whose leaders can not simply count on the troubles of the right to promote themselves.

Update: This poll also appears to carry some good news for Segolene Royal. While Delanoe is the first choice of the French for the position of First Secretary (21% against 20%), Royal is the clear favorite of left-wing voters (29% to 22%) and Socialist voters (31% to 24%).
