Peace Prize for What?

The latest media bomb set off today: Michelle Bachelet, the president of Chile, plans on nominating Ingrid Betancourt for the Nobel Peace Prize. Is she serious? Just like being a POW in a Vietnamese camp for five and a half years does not automatically make you knowledgeable about national security, being a FARC prisoner for six years and a former presidential candidate doesn't suddenly qualify you for the peace prize. That is not to write off the experiences completely; both McCain and Betancourt revealed their true characters in enduring such terrors and still coming out strong. But let's at least try to reserve international prizes for people who have actually done something.
